Abstract

The rapid growth of tourism and digital technology has created a need for an integrated platform that brings together trip planning, booking, and expense management. Currently, many travelers use multiple disconnected services: one service for searching destinations, another one to book flights or hotels and a separate spreadsheet or notes app to plan their budgets. This means they are getting a disjointed and inefficient planning experience when it comes to traveling. The present paper describes the design, development and testing of a Travel Planner Web Application, implemented with the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js) that combines destination discovery, browsing for packages, their secure booking, ratings and reviews, and management of these practices. It is built with a three-layered architecture: the presentation layer is implemented using a modern front-end framework, React.js; the business logic layer is built using a JavaScript framework, Node.js/Express.js; and the data layer is a MongoDB database with role-based access control for regular users and for administrators. The dedicated Admin Dashboard provides the administrator with the ability to manage travel packages, track bookings and payments, manage user accounts and review customer feedback, all in real time. The application was developed incrementally (Agile) and tested for correctness, security and performance of the modules using functional, unit, and white box testing. The present paper shows that this approach can provide a scalable, maintainable, and user friendly travel management system and discusses some limitations and future directions for improvements such as incorporating AI-powered travel recommendations and integrating payment gateways into the system.
